Guatemala is well-known for its high-quality Arabica coffee. Its unique taste is owed to the diverse microclimates, volcanic soil, and elevated altitudes of regions like Antigua, Acatenango, Huehuetenango, and Cobán. The coffee has a balanced profile with a medium to full body, bright acidity, and flavors of chocolate and subtle citrus, along with floral notes.

Six primary Arabica coffee varieties thrive in Guatemala, including Typica, Caturra, Bourbon, Catuai, Pache, and Maragogipe.

On a global scale, Guatemala ranks 10th in coffee exports; according to the International Coffee in Guatemala, it comes from smallholder farmers, emphasizing their pivotal role in the country’s coffee landscape. Guatemala has been an innovator in the coffee world and has established a denomination of origin system for its eight unique producing regions.

Legacy of Leadership

Guatemala has consistently demonstrated its leadership in the coffee industry. In 1973, it became the first country to establish a denomination of origin system for its coffee, recognizing the unique qualities of its eight distinct producing regions. This system ensures that coffees from these regions retain their distinctive flavors and characteristics.
